The IRS Launches a New Mobile App: What Taxpayers Need to Know

Managing your tax information just got easier.

The Internal Revenue Service recently launched a new mobile app called IRS, replacing the longtime IRS2Go app and expanding the number of services taxpayers can access directly from their smartphones. The new platform is part of the IRS’s ongoing effort to improve digital services and provide more convenient ways for taxpayers to manage their accounts securely.

For individuals who regularly check refund status, make tax payments or access tax records, the new app offers a more comprehensive and user-friendly experience.

What’s New?

While IRS2Go allowed users to track refunds and access basic tax information, the new IRS app expands mobile access to several features that were previously available primarily through the IRS’s online account platform.

Through the app, taxpayers can now:

  • Check refund and amended return status
  • View account balance information
  • Make payments and review payment history
  • Access tax records and transcripts
  • View select IRS notices and letters
  • Manage certain communication preferences
  • Retrieve an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for identity theft protection

The app is available for both Apple and Android devices and can be downloaded through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Existing IRS2Go users with automatic updates enabled will receive the new app automatically.

A More Convenient Way to Access Tax Information

One of the most significant enhancements is the ability to securely sign in and access personal tax account information from a mobile device. Taxpayers can view payment activity, download transcripts and review important notices without logging in through a desktop browser.

For many individuals, this means faster access to critical tax information when applying for loans, responding to IRS correspondence or preparing future tax returns.

The app also provides access to resources for free tax filing, payment options and other frequently used IRS services.

Security Remains a Priority

As the IRS expands digital access, taxpayers should remain vigilant against fraud and scams.

The agency is encouraging users to download the app only from verified IRS links or official app store listings. Officials also warn taxpayers to be cautious of look-alike apps, unsolicited text messages, emails or pop-ups claiming to provide IRS account access. The IRS does not request sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited electronic communications.

Before entering personal information, always verify that you are using the official IRS application.

The Future of IRS Digital Services

According to the IRS, this launch is only the beginning. Officials have indicated that additional capabilities and services will be added over time as the agency continues advancing its digital-first strategy.

Importantly, the new mobile app does not replace IRS.gov or existing online account platforms. Taxpayers and tax professionals will still need to use IRS.gov for access to the full suite of Individual Online Account, Business Tax Account and Tax Pro Account services.
